The Churches of Old Cairo

Tucked into the southern end of Cairo lies the district known as Old Cairo—once a Roman fortress and later a spiritual stronghold of the Coptic Christian community. Here, you'll step into the Hanging Church, built atop ancient Roman towers and decorated with carved icons, biblical scenes, and centuries-old wooden ceilings. Nearby, the Church of St. Sergius is believed to have sheltered the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. The neighborhood also includes the Ben Ezra Synagogue, once a vibrant center of Jewish life. Your guide will share the multi-layered history of this sacred enclave, where faiths coexisted and communities left their mark on the stones.

The Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali

Perched above the city on a limestone spur, the Citadel of Cairo commands both the skyline and the imagination. Built by Salah al-Din in the 12th century to defend against Crusaders, it later became the seat of Egypt's rulers. Inside its walls stands the grand Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with its sweeping domes, cascading chandeliers, and alabaster interior inspired by Ottoman style. From the courtyard, the city spreads out beneath you—a view once reserved for rulers, now shared by all. Dr. Kamal explains how the site reflects Egypt’s shifting political powers and architectural tastes across centuries.

Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i Mosques

Just beyond the Citadel, the mosques of Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i stand like architectural rivals—one from the 14th century and the other from the 19th, yet both echoing similar grandeur in scale and symmetry. Sultan Hassan’s mosque once served as a theological school with each of its four iwans (teaching halls) devoted to a different school of Islamic law. Al-Rifa’i, by contrast, contains the tombs of Egypt’s last kings and even the exiled Shah of Iran. Hany will explain how design, politics, and legacy play out in stone and script across these two monuments.

Khan El-Khalili Walk

Your final stop brings you into the winding alleys of Khan El-Khalili, Cairo’s most storied market. Built during the Mamluk era and still thriving today, it’s a place where tailors, spice vendors, and silversmiths share narrow lanes with historic coffeehouses and hidden minarets. This isn’t just a place to buy—it's a place to feel Cairo’s rhythm. Your guide will point out the most authentic sections of the market and share insights about its evolution from a caravanserai hub to the cultural magnet it is today.

Return to Your Accommodation

After a day rich in stories, architecture, and Cairo’s living heritage, your driver and guide will take you back to your hotel. Whether you're staying near the Nile, in downtown Cairo, or in Giza, the drive offers a moment to process the day’s layers—from pharaonic foundations to modern voices echoing in old walls. As always, Nubatia Tours ensures your return is just as smooth and welcoming as your arrival.
